Performing arts

At our Academy, we view music and the performing arts as the great connector.

Music

We offer a rich choral programme, including KS3 Choir, Elite Choir and Year 7 choir, which involves the entirety of Year 7 in their first term at AGFS. Alongside our choral programme we offer a KS3 Bands club, Steel pans and instrumental lessons in piano, voice, electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, violin and drums. These ensembles and any keen soloists are given the opportunity to perform in our performing arts events, such as the Black History concert, Christmas concert and AGFS Cabaret. In addition to this, the Performing Arts department stages an auditioned musical each year involving scholars from Years 7-10.

We also benefit from being part of the Ark Schools Network and their excellent network-wide music programme. Scholars can audition for scholarship programmes providing additional training and opportunities. Designed to foster a life-long love of music, the Ark Music Programme offers a wealth of experience for all pupils at all levels, including an annual Music Gala where pupils have the opportunity to perform at a national level.

Drama

We offer a club every day, including KS3 elite performance, dance, technical theatre club, Year 10 drama surgery, Year 11 drama surgery and a KS4 drama drop-in club to provide additional support. Scholars develop their creative skills and work towards performance pieces that are then shown to a live audience in our school concerts and end of term assemblies. We have a selected group of KS3 scholars who spend the second half of the academic year rehearsing twice a week towards the school musical. We have a technical theatre team which supports backstage during the shows, and experience training in operating the lighting and sound desks.
